About The Mold Scout
A story shaped by experience, environment, and scent detection in Southern California
The Mold Scout specializes in advanced mold detection using the unmatched precision of certified canine inspections. Based in Los Angeles, we serve homes and businesses across Southern California—and beyond—wherever expert mold detection is needed.
Our early work began with Roger, our first professionally trained mold detection dog. Roger was trained at Florida Canine Academy under Master Trainer Bill Whitstine, a respected pioneer in canine scent detection with experience across law enforcement, forensic, and environmental applications. Working with Roger helped establish the foundation of our approach and demonstrated how effective scent detection can be when applied carefully in residential settings.
As our experience grew, so did our understanding of what long-term accuracy requires. Today, our detection work is led by Kirby, whose training and ongoing refinement reflect a more advanced and disciplined standard.
Learn more about Kirby, and our approach to canine scent detection, on The Mold Scout's blog.
With noses that can detect mold at just one part per trillion, Roger & Kirby can locate hidden growth behind walls, beneath flooring, and in concealed areas that often go unnoticed using traditional methods.
Mold Detection That Goes
Beyond the Surface
Mold issues aren't always tied to illness. In fact, many of our clients are responding to signs of water damage, poor ventilation, or concerns about the long-term integrity of their homes.
As newer homes are increasingly built with inferior materials and inadequate execution, hidden mold is becoming more common—even in recently constructed spaces.
Our
Expertise
The Mold Scout combines the accuracy of canine scent detection with a deep understanding of building science. Every inspection is led by Adam McDermott, a NORMI (National Organization of Remediators and Microbial Inspectors) certified mold inspector who locates the source of your mold with Roger, and then goes one step further to identify if the mold present is actively growing or dormant, its species, and whether mycotoxins are present through various types of testing, helping to guide the remediation protocol.
